The moon seen at its closest point to the Earth

After finding out from Bob at Black holes and Astrostuff that the moon would be at its closest point to the Earth last night, 12 December 2008, I thought I'd have my first go at photographing it. I had a small window of about 5 minutes where there was no heavy clouds so ran outside with my Canon 450D. These are what I managed (my first try remember!) photograph of bright moon Moon through the trees moon and clouds through the branches Moon through the trees moon and clouds I did these all handheld with my 55-250mm IS lens and had quite a long shutter speed. I was very pleased with how they turned out really. I love the way the bare branches of the tree give it a kind of creepy feel. The moon that night was apparently 14% bigger than it would normally appear and some 30% brighter. It looked beautiful.

HINT: If you click on any of my images, you'll be taken to my Flickr site where you can see them in their original sizes.

I would definitely recommend checking out Black holes and astrostuff, there are some cracking images on the site and a wealth of information that just makes you want to get out and look at the sky in a completely different way. I had one peek at the site and now I'm hooked!

Sky Watch Friday 22 - Night tree

Naked oak tree in the night sky Check out other Skywatch Friday images here: Whilst out in the back garden recently, as mentioned in my previous post, I realised how cool that old Oak tree actually looks with no leaves on. This is the view at night from my back garden- the park is just beyond the oak tree but there is also another road behind the oak, parallel with mine, so there are a few houses too. I have been struggling to get decent night time shots and not having a remote control certainly makes it harder! I will get one after Christmas hopefully and then I should have more luck. I hope you agree that the tree looks pretty stunning in the night sky, no foliage, yet still strong looking.

Skywatch Friday 21 - Creepy branches in the night sky

Creepy branches and clouds in the night sky Check out more Skywatch Friday images here:
I was out the othere night in my back garden learning how to capture the evening sky. I am finding it extremely difficult to get good results! The problem I have is that I need to leave the shutter open for such a long time. No problems with the tripod but when I press the button to take the picture, it must jog a little. I need a remote control I think! I enjoy taking this kind of picture though, however frustrating it can be. I think the evening sky is beautiful. I love the clouds and the amazing colours you get to see, and I really like the eeriness of this particular shot.

Sky Watch Friday #20- Sunsets and windmills in Nalliers, France

windmill sunset 3 windmill sunset 6 windmill sunset 5 windmill sunset 4 windmill sunset windmill sunset 2 Check out more sky watch friday images here: These are a few photos that my boyfriend took in Nalliers, Vendee, France this weekend. I have cropped and enhanced colours a little, but not loads! The windmills form part of a set of about 18 in a long line that crosses the main road through Nalliers. If you look closely on the first and last photos you can actually see the light bulb on the top of the wind mill that flashes red to warn aeroplanes and the like. These were taken using a 55-250mm EFS telephoto lens and the Canon 450D.

Sky Watch Friday #20 - Sunset at Work

Photograph of Sunset at Dudman Cement Works Photograph of Sunset at Dudman Cement Works 3 Photograph of Sunset at Dudman Cement Works 2 Check out more sky watch friday pictures here : The sunsets have started to look really beautiful in the evenings and I just had to take some pictures this time round. This is the view from my office, a cement works right on the Itchen river, Southampton. It doesn't appear that pretty at first glance but as dusk draws in, it turns into something completely different and I love it! These pictures have been cropped and adjusted in Paint Shop Pro, but nothing major, the sky really did look that lovely, I just tried to do it justice and enhance the colours a bit.

Rainbow appearing at work

rainbow in the sky

Something beautiful happened today at work, it made me smile and brightened my day. Unfortunately, I didn't have my Canon DSLR with me so had to use the company's Casio point and click. Not bad, but really wish I'd had my own camera!

White Daisy on blurred green background

White daisy on bright green background
This was one of my first photos with the Canon, I processed it in Paint Shop Pro and got a really nice deep, green background going on but the daisy sayed pretty clear too. I like it.

purple flower on black and white background

beautiful purple flower on black and white background
I absolutely love this flower but have no idea what it is! It has amazing colours, so I tried making it stand out more by converting the background to black and white in paint shop pro. It is a truly beautiful yet strange flower.

Strange House on a Misty Morning

very pretty looking house on a misty morning This is a photo I took of the house across the road from me, as seen from the sideway of my house. It has always intrigued me as it almost looks like it has a turret or something. It just doesn't look the same as the other houses round here. This has been processed in dphdr software.

Green Praying Mantis

close up shot of a big, bright green praying mantis This is a picture of a praying mantis that I spotted on the wall at our place in France. I managed to get fairly close but I was too scared to get closer! I don't know if they bite or anything and it looked a bit mean with those pointy front claws! I didn't quite get the bokeh right on this one, but it's not a bad shot really considering I was so freaked out by it.

My Cat - Buzz

My cat Buzz looking cute and pensive My cat Buzz having a roll around in the garden My cat Buzz looking silly! This is my cat Buzz in a couple of cute poses. He hates having his photo taken so these are rare, decent shots! He is great to photograph when he lets me though as I think he is quite a photogenic creature.

water drops

close up shot of a water drop coming out of the tap
This was a fairly good result for the first attempt (well, I took about 25 pictures but only a few came out ok).

water stream

close up image of the stream of water coming from the hot tap
This was a close up of the stream of water coming out of my hot tap in the kitchen. Just made me want to have a go at photographing water. Turned out ok I think.

water drop

close up of a single drop in the middle of a stream of water as it falls from the tap
This one came out a bit strange- like one drop in the middle of a dead straight stream of water. Looks cool though I reckon!

water drops

4 water droplets caught as they were falling from the tap
I thought I'd give this a go. I have seen some fantastic pictures like this before and thought I'd like to try it. For my first go, I think it's come out ok. There will be plenty more like this to come as I enjoyed this very much!

Water dragon in a funny pose

Asian Water Dragon sunbathing in a funny pose
Dory, my brother in law's water dragon doing her sunbathing and having a quick peek at the crazy lady with the camera! She looks so comfy with her arms folded. Look how pretty her scales are.

This is Dory scaling the sofa (running away from the baby that lives there- or that mad photographer!)

sunbathing water dragon

This is what Dory does when you move her into the sun- it is so funny! She starts sunbathing literally the second she moves into the sunlight.

This is Dory, she belongs to my brother in law and is a beautiful creature. I couldn't resist taking her picture as she is very photogenic.

wet broken spider web

broken spider web with water droplets on
I went out the other morning and it was quite misty. I spotted hundreds of spider webs with dew on them, which made them really visible. I decided to try and photograph some and got a few good results I think. I like this photograph- the dew drops, the broken web- it just works!

wet spider web

close up of a wet spider web

This one looks really good I think. The dew is really cool- you can see each drop.

dark spider web

creepy dark spider web
I love this picture- it looks so dark and creepy!

spider web angle 2

strange picture of a spider web caught at a funny angle
Another good angle I reckon

spider web angle 1

spider web at a strange angle
I like the obscure angle on this one.

spider web 3

spider web on a dewy misty morning
This one turned out well I thought.

spider web

spider web on a dewy morning
This was quite a large web in the neighbour's front garden. The dew makes them quite visible in the mornings.

spider in web large

close up of a spider in its web on a dewy morning
I have this irrational, morbid fear of spiders and anything related to them but they photograph really well so I can't just ignore them! It is amazing the courage I get when I have my camera in my hand- I managed to get very close to this one without having a cardiac arrest!

pretty spider web

I really like this one as it looks quite pretty.

gathering at our little house in mervent forest, france

a little gathering at our holiday gite in France
I'm not so impressed with this photo, but I was really just messing around with Dynamic Photo HDR software. It was taken at our little holiday place in Mervent, France. The house is in the middle of the woods so we get amazing wildlife there too. We happened to have our friends over one evening so I thought I'd take a few snaps on the Canon 450D. The original was better, just a normal shot.

view of a river taken from the bridge at ringwood, UK

HDR photo of the river avon in dorset, uk

Now this photograph was not taken by me, my boyfriend took it the other day whilst he was in Ringwood, at the Fish Inn just on the river Avon. It was a nice photograph in its original form but just lacked a bit of colour. I used dphdr to process the photo and I think the result is awsome! I really, really like this one.

birds in flight

pigeons in flight manipulated in hdr software
Just after I got the new Canon, I was hanging around in my back garden taking photos of trees and the clouds and anything else I could think of when a flock of racing pigeons started flying over head. Just having the kit lens, 18-55mm, I didn't think I would get a very good shot of them but I was quite surprised how nice this turned out. I cropped the photo and processed it in Dynamic Photo HDR (from now on, dphdr) software and I really like the end result.

black and white cat with green eyes HDR

Buzz- my beautiful black and white cat. HDR version showing his bright green eyes

I took this photo of my cat, Buzz, a few weeks ago. It was a lovely day hence the fact he was sitting under the table covered in shadows! Also, he does not like me taking photos of him. I used Dynamic Photo HDR to tone map the image and the end result was this. I love the way his eyes look so bright and green. He looks so pretty here and very pensive. I think in his mind he was telling me to get lost and stop taking photos!
